Equality and Diversity

The Equality Act 2010 introduced a Public Sector Equality Duty that applies to public bodies, including maintained schools and academies.  As such, all schools have a responsibility to comply with these three core elements:

  1. Eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct that is prohibited by this Act,
  2. Advance equality of opportunity between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it,
  3. Foster good relations between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it.

At Heage Primary School, our values of Kindness, Respect, Honesty, Teamwork, Resilience and Compassion support us to embrace Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and the principles of the Public Sector Equality Duty.

We work to ensure equality of opportunity for all of our pupils, staff, families and our wider school community, irrespective of age, disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.

We aim to develop a culture of inclusion and diversity in which our whole school community feel proud of their identity and are able to participate fully in school life. We believe that diversity is a strength that should be respected and celebrated by all those who learn or teach at our school and all those who visit us.

We tackle discrimination through the positive promotion of equality, by challenging bullying stereotypes and by embedding our school values to support the creation of an environment that champions a culture of kindness and respect.

Our Equality Objectives for the current school year are:

  1. To promote pupil appreciation of different cultures, ethnicities and religions through our curriculum, assemblies and events and by the continued development of our library and learning resources.
  2. To ensure our pupil premium children attend school regularly to maximise learning opportunities.
  3. To improve the progress of SEND pupils to ensure their continued development.
