Physical Education

Intent Statement

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect." The National Curriculum.

At Heage Primary School, we recognise that physical activity and sport are essential parts of a child’s everyday life and are a key factor in their future well-being. We think that it is important that children develop the knowledge and understanding, skills, values and attitudes that learners need in order to become lifelong lovers of being active. We hope that, through the sporting opportunities and physical activity on offer, the children will develop a love and passion for sport that will continue into their later lives. We aim to present them with opportunities to compete against themselves and others, work in partnerships and teams, build self-confidence and perseverance and the real sense of achievement that this particular aspect of a child’s education can provide. This is developed through a progression of skills so that children are continually building on these skills as they progress through school.

Our six core values are fully embedded within the PE curriculum at Heage. Within the learning behaviours, children are expected to work together kindly and collaboratively, demonstrating teamwork. They are encouraged to give critical feedback which focusses on their ability to have respect and compassion towards one another. Within PE, children have a responsibility to keep themselves and those around them safe and demonstrate honesty and resilience in the outcomes they produce to showcase their learning.

House Teams

Each child in school is allocated one of four house teams (Chatsworth, Kedleston, Hardwick, Haddon) and they remain part of that team throughout their time at Heage. The children will compete for their house team in various activities throughout the year, including during PE lessons, lunchtime games and sports day.
